Nose Surgery - Rhinoplasty Jacksonville FL
by Dr. A.H. Nezami at Jacksonville Cosmetic Surgery Center
Rhinoplasty is the surgical sculpting of the nose. Since the nose is one of the most beautifully characteristic features of the face, even minute alterations can be instrumental in achieving facial balance, and can dramatically reshape the facial silhouette.
Rhinoplasty can be performed as either an internally accessed or open technique. If the goal of the surgery is to narrow flared nostrils, the incision will be placed at the base of the nose. There is no visible scarring when internal incisions are used, while open technique surgery will result in a minimal scar at the base of the nose.
Through Rhinoplasty, the skin of the nose is lifted while the underlying bone and cartilage structure is sculpted to the desired shape. Excess cartilage may be removed and the tip of the nose may also be sculpted to balance and support the change. Optimal rhinoplasty requires two to three hours of surgery.
After the surgery, patients experience headache and some nasal pain that can be managed through medication. Swelling and bruising around the eyes is expected, but bruising will peak around the third day of recovery. In order to mitigate swelling during this time, patients are advised to keep their head elevated, and to apply cold compresses. Although patients may feel ready to resume light activity two days, typical bruising and swelling will more gradually dissipate over a two to three week time period.
The best candidates for Rhinoplasty are people in good health who maintain realistic expectations about the result. Younger patients are advised to wait until age sixteen before considering rhinoplasty, as their aesthetic sense and body image is likely to mature over time. The most successful rhinoplasties aim to achieve facial balance through minimal invasiveness. The particular structure of each patient's nasal bones and cartilage, the thickness of his skin and shape of her face will determine the safest surgical possibilities.
