Many of our patients in Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach and Ponte Vedra ask us frequently to explain the difference between a Plastic Surgeon and a Cosmetic Surgeon.

Only a surgeon who has completed the plastic surgery training successfully and has been granted a certificate in Plastic Surgery can call him or herself a “Plastic Surgeon.” A physician without this training, such as a dermatologist, gynecologist, dentist, oral surgeon or any other physician, can call him or herself a “Cosmetic Surgeon.” This does not imply in anyway that you should be worried about your choice; it is simply an explanation of the differences in specialization and training.

It is important to choose a doctor who has hospital privilege, in case of complications after surgery. A doctor must have have hospital privileges to be able to admit his patient to the hospital for further treatment.

There is another reason to look for a doctor who has hospital privileges. A doctor only receives hospital privileges once the doctors on a  hospital’s credentials committee look into the doctor’s credentials and background and approve the physician’s qualifications. The yellow pages, Internet sites, and magazines do not check the credentials of the doctors that present themselves as plastic or cosmetic surgeons.

Dr. Nezami’s utmost concern for patient safety led his decision to keep his surgical facility within the hospital complex. If for an unforeseen reason a complication arises, being in a hospital complex means that emergency care can be provided immediately.
