Face: Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

If you or your child have prominent ears and feel uncomfortable about them, then otoplasty may be the right procedure for you or your child.

Large or prominent ears at any age may be a source of ridicule or teasing by others. The surgery can be done on children 5 years old. The earlier the ear surgery, the less teasing and ridicule the child will have to endure. It is recommended that parents stay alert to their child's feelings about protruding ears; don't insist on the surgery until your child wants the change. Children who want the ear surgery are generally more cooperative during the process and happier with the outcome.

The technique will depend on the problem. Usually a small incision is made in the back of the ear to expose the ear cartilage. The cartilage is then sculpted and bent hack toward the head. Non-removable stitches may be used to help maintain the new shape. Occasionally some cartilage is removed.

During your first consultation at our Jacksonville Cosmetic Surgery Center, Dr. Nezami will explain in detail your specific surgery, recovery time, complications, and the exact cost of the surgery.

Preparing for Ear Surgery

We advise our patients in Jacksonville and Jacksonville Beach to avoid taking certain medications such as aspirin and Ibuprofen and vitamin E. We advise them to stop smoking at least three weeks before the surgery, if they are smokers. Smoking interferes with blood flow to the skin and prevents the rapid healing and will cause complication.  At your pre-operation consultation you will be given specific and detailed instruction.

Incision for Ear Surgery

Incision is usually in the back of the ear and heals well leaving a faint scar that will fade with time.

Recovery period after Ear Surgery

The patient's head will be wrapped in a bulky bandage immediately following surgery to promote the best molding and healing. The ears may throb or ache a little for a few days, but this can be well controlled by oral medication.   Within a few days, a lighter head dressing similar to a headband will replace the bulky bandages. You should engage in light walking as soon as possible to minimize the potential for blood clots and other complications. A return to light activity is possible as soon as you feel ready, usually within a few days of surgery.  You may be able to return to work and more normal activity within few days, as long as you do not engage in any heavy lifting or vigorous exercise. Any activity in which the ear might be bent should be avoided for a month or so. Most children can go back to school after 7 day or so, if they are careful about playground activity. Keep in mind that recovery period varies from patient to patient.
